The story is set in the fictional small town of Newvale, Connecticut, and takes place during the approximate period of 1920 to the early 1970s. The main characters, Christopher (Hack) Hacker and Elizabeth (Libby) Pontillo, are natives of the town and know and love each other from childhood. Hack enlists in the Army when WWII breaks out and has an exciting and dangerous period of service which influences his later life, while Libby attends college. When both return home after the war, they marry, raise a small family and become Newvale's leading citizens, thanks to Libby's beauty, charm and intelligence and Hack's stubborn determination to achieve wealth and position. As the years go by, they encounter problems which overshadow Hack's phenomenal business successes and exacerbate a secret weakness of Libby's and lead to a shocking climax.
